Adhemar Ferreira da Silva of Brazil earned a gold medal for the triple jump at the first Pan American Games in 1951 and went on to repeat this feat the the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics and the 1955 and 1959 Pan American Games. Da Silva, who died in 2001, is also remembered for his role as “Death” in 1959 film Black Orpheus.
